The California ground squirrels can be found in almost all parts of California and can be a very destructive pest. Their burrows can collapse under the weight of people, machinery, pets, and livestock. The damage from their burrowing can undermine structures and cause major erosion problems. In addition to damaging the ground, these pests can be a terror for gardeners. Ground squirrels chew on and destroy plastic sprinkler heads and irrigation lines, as well as eat many garden and ornamental plants. Nut and fruit trees, such as apple, orange, almond, peach, and walnut, are favorites.
